Problem Context
Tailings and slurry pipelines are some of the most demanding applications in any mine site. They must carry abrasive slurries over long distances while withstanding constant wear, pressure fluctuations, and environmental stresses. Failures can result in costly downtime, lost production, and safety risks.
Technical Challenge
Pipeline design needs to balance abrasion resistance, pressure rating, and flexibility. Straight runs require smooth, low-friction surfaces for efficiency, while raised areas, long directional changes, or vibrating sections demand hose flexibility without sacrificing strength. The system should tolerate both high pressure and low pressure zones along its length. Elongation control is critical: positive elongation under high pressure reduces internal diameter and can restrict flow; negative elongation (contraction) increases diameter, raising pressure drop over distance, and in some configurations can jeopardise end-coupling retention.
Our Solution
We build slurry and tailings pipelines using a combination of polyurethane-lined steel pipe and heavy-duty rubber mining hose. Pacflotech® polyurethane spools provide superior abrasion resistance and low-friction transport over long, straight runs, minimising wear and energy loss. For raised sections, long radius bends, or areas where movement and vibration occur, Abrasor® high-pressure mining hose is installed to absorb stress and maintain flexibility while preventing premature failure.
This hybrid approach ensures each section of the tailings line is optimised for its duty – rigid and wear-resistant where needed, and flexible and pressure-rated where movement or alignment challenges exist.
